A mechanical engineer from Waldeck has successfully negotiated over 200 miles of tough Yorkshire terrain to raise vital funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Yorkshire born cycling enthusiast, Adam Machan, along with fellow members of the Sheffrec Cycling Club, took part in a grueling two-day cycling event, dubbed ‘Le Charity Ride’.

The 263-mile journey from Leeds to Sheffield via Harrogate and York, which would take little more than an hour by train, included a series of challenging climbs and took two days to complete.

Speaking about the challenge Adam (32) said a smooth beginning quickly became a tough physical battle.

“Starting in Leeds we headed north to Otley before turning west to Ilkey and Skipton,” explained Adam. “We then rode into the Yorkshire Dales which quickly became extremely challenging with some tough and exhausting climbs through the Buttertubs Pass and Leyburn Moor.”

The route followed by the cyclists was inspired by the recent decision to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire in 2014. The competition has only visited the southern half of the country in previous years and is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Yorkshire for the Grand Départ.

After journey from Leeds to Harrogate the 22-strong team made their way from York to Sheffield via the Northern Peak District which Adam described as “a beast of a ride” with its 90-mile stretch of hilly terrain.

The Sheffrec Cycling Club, which was founded in 1989, expects to raise a total of £15,000 adding to the £35,000 raised in previous years and donations are still being accepted for the hospital which receives up to 245,000 visits every year.

Waldeck’s Mechanical and Electrical Director Ged Smith said: “The team here at Waldeck in Sheffield would like to congratulate Adam and his fellow cyclists on completing this grueling bike ride and raising a fantastic sum of money for such a worthwhile cause.

“We’re all Yorkshire born and bred and the support we’ve received from the Sheffield business community has been overwhelming. As a company we’re keen to give something back to the city in return which is why we were so pleased to be able to support Adam and his team mates by sponsoring the event.”

Incredibly, every member of the club managed to complete the challenge which saw the cyclists ride in by moonlight to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital via the notoriously steep Jenkin Road.
