25th June 2013

Keen cyclist Adam Machan (32) will be pedalling up hill and down dale to raise money for a Sheffield children’s charity in September 2013.

Next year’s Tour de France will begin in Yorkshire and Adam, a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Waldeck, has decided to cycle two stages in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital with his teammates at Sheffrec Cycling Club.

Although the club undertakes an annual charity ride Adam said this will be tougher than anything they’ve done before.

“The Yorkshire stages of the Tour de France cover some 400km between them and include some extremely challenging climbs, including the iconic Buttertubs Pass and Holme Moss, so this will be no mean feat!

“I’ve been cycling seriously for the last three years but personally this will be a massive step up. Seeing as it’s the first time Le Tour has visited the north of England, having previously only made visits to London and the south coast, we couldn’t pass up the challenge. It’s going to be two days of pain but I’m really looking forward to it!

“We’ve raised over £35,000 in the last nine years which we’re really proud of but this year we’re pulling out all the stops and have planned a series of events to help us raise as much money as possible.

“These include another cycling race called The Strines Challenge on 8th September and a charity ball and auction called Le Célébration du Vélo in March 2014.”

Waldeck, whose Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) division is based at The Quadrant in Sheffield, is keen to support Adam in his endeavour.

“Since it opened in 2012 our Sheffield office has grown substantially and now employs eight staff,” explained M&E Director Ged Smith.

“We’re all Yorkshire born and bred and the support we’ve received from the Sheffield business community has been overwhelming. We’re keen to give something back to the city in return which is why we’re so pleased to support Adam and his team mates by sponsoring the event.

“To me this sounds like a really tough challenge but we’re sure Adam will display the same kind of enthusiasm and determination as he does in the workplace.”

Le Charity Ride will take place on 21st and 22nd September 2013 starting in Leeds. To donate please visit Adam’s JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/Adam-Machan or for more information please visit www.sheffrec-cc.org.uk/charity_ride
