A new initiative by Woldmarsh to engage the next generation of farmers has been met with enthusiasm by more than 1,000 children.

The agricultural buying group, based in Louth, unveiled Young Woldmarsh at the Lincolnshire Show, where hundreds of children collected goody bags packed with literature on farming facts, stickers, an activity sheet and colouring pencils, and even some carrot seeds so they can start growing their own food.

The initiative for 5 to 18-year-olds aims to make young people more aware of the agricultural industry and how they can get involved.

Youngsters taking home a goody bag are being encouraged to take part in a competition to see who can grow the strangest shaped carrot from the seeds in the goody bag. The winner will receive a £20 iTunes voucher.

Katie Jarvis-Grove, project leader for Young Woldmarsh, said: “We were thrilled with the response from children and teenagers at the Lincolnshire Show. This is a very exciting project for Woldmarsh and the next stage in our commitment to ensure future generations understand more about the farming industry.

“We want to sow the seeds of excitement about the industry at a young age and educate children about how buying groups benefit farm businesses.”

Would-be farmers can start to engage with Woldmarsh via social media sites Twitter and Facebook to find out more about Woldmarsh, what they do and how as a company they help farm businesses.

Pictures for the competition should be sent to l.mather@woldmarsh.com, uploaded to www.facebook.com/Woldmarsh or tweeted to @woldmarsh using the hashtag #YoungWoldmarsh. Entries should be received by 31st October 2013.
