News release

18th June 2013

Budding farmers will have the chance to talk to those in the industry when Young Woldmarsh launches at the Lincolnshire Show this week.

Woldmarsh, a farmers’ buying group based in Louth, is setting up the initiative aimed at five to 18-year-olds in a bid to engage the next generation of farmers before they embark on a career in the agricultural sector.

The project aims to make young people more aware of the agricultural industry and how they can get involved, with future plans including local community events aimed at children and teenagers.

The team behind the project will be at the Woldmarsh-sponsored Discovery Zone at the Lincolnshire Show on 19th and 20th June. Teenagers attending the show will be able to speak to the Young Woldmarsh team, which includes Katie Jarvis-Grove, Lucy Mather, Shannon Eaglestone and Cheryl Paul, while younger children can get their hands on a goody bag sponsored by Bunn Fertiliser Ltd.

Katie, project leader for Young Woldmarsh, said: “This is an exciting project for Woldmarsh. We will be engaging with the younger farming community to sow the seed about agriculture and how buying groups fit into this lifestyle moving into the future.

“The Lincolnshire Show is our key local event which many local schools attend, and our team will be there to hand out some goody bags which include an activity sheet, colouring pencils, a Crunch booklet which features key farming facts and even some carrot seeds so they can start growing their own food now.

“We’ll also have some Young Woldmarsh stickers which children can use to show their support for the initiative. We hope that the children attending the show enjoy their goodies and will learn something at the same time.”

The launch follows the introduction of the Woldmarsh Facebook page earlier this year, and it is hoped that would-be farmers will use that and social media site Twitter to find out more about Woldmarsh, what they do and how as a company they help farm businesses.

Youngsters taking home a goody bag are being encouraged to take part in an online competition to see who can grow the strangest shaped carrot, by sending their pictures to www.facebook.com/Woldmarsh, and tweeting them using the hashtag #YoungWoldmarsh.  People can also send their pictures by email to l.mather@woldmarsh.com.  The winner will receive a £20 iTunes voucher.  Entries should be received by 31st October 2013.
