York Knavesmire 30 & 31 July 2016

A brand new weekend event is set to join York’s tourism calendar next July, with the launch of a huge new summer festival for local people and visitors taking place at York’s Knavesmire on the weekend of 30 & 31 July.

The festival, which includes blockbusting daytime arena displays, a fairground, and live music and stunning aerial pyrotechnic displays to close each day, is the latest project from York company, Events & Attractions Limited, which has been involved in successful events around the country for 25 years.

“I have thought for years that York is missing a big family-friendly event which includes something for everyone with an affordable ticket price, which is how the Show In The Park came about,” explains managing director, John Lowery. “We’ve spent the last year looking at the feasibility and planning, and working with City of York Council and Make It York, and we are delighted to be able to announce the detailed plans for the 2016 event.”

Daytime attractions will include a primary arena with displays including Galloping Horses, stunt shows, clown cars and BMX demonstrations, and a second arena which will host the Red Dragon Monster Truck. Children will be able to learn circus skills, enjoy Punch & Judy and meet friendly animals in a petting zoo, whilst walkabout entertainers keep the crowds amused. A funfair featuring rides never before seen in York will provide thrills and spills for children, teens and adults.

In the evening, the main stage will be filled with a party band as a warm-up act to a major tribute act each evening – a One Direction tribute on Saturday evening and a Take That tribute on Sunday. The festival will end each day with ‘Twister’ pyrotechnics – fireworks fired out of planes to create an unmissable finale.

“This will be the kind of event where families can easily spend the full day and evening, with a wristband allowing them to come and go as they please – ideal if they need to pop home to feed the dog or drop younger children off with babysitters – so they can enjoy a fantastic party evening of live music,” explains Trevor Nutt, Event Director.

Kate McMullen, Head of Consumer Products and Marketing, Make It York said, “York is fast gaining a reputation as a festival city, with quality events such as the York Food Festival, York Literature Festival and the upcoming ASFF Short Film Festival, to name just three.  This event will add to our year round calendar and is fantastic news for York.  The Knavesmire is a superb location, accessible both by public transport and car and we’re confident Show in the Park will offer two full days of quality entertainment for families.”

Cllr Nigel Ayre, the council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said: “This new event is an exciting addition to York’s programme of events and festivals, which will appeal to all ages of residents and visitors. The Show in the Park promises a weekend of family friendly fun and entertainment and we look forward to the inaugural event next summer.”

Ticket prices have been set at £12.50 per day for adults or £20 for a two day ticket, £10/£15 for 12-16s and seniors, and £5/£7.50 for children aged 6 – 11. Under 5s get in free. The daytime entertainment and evening concerts are included in the price, although there will be a charge for individual activities, including the funfair. Those booking online in advance will receive £5 of discount vouchers redeemable at the funfair.
