Henderson Selects Siemens for Italian Export Deal
- Siemens’ drive train integration enables savings and efficiencies

John M Henderson (JMH) has specified four large geared motors from Siemens Mechanical Drives in Leeds in an export deal with Italiana Coke in Italy.
JMH is a Scottish coke oven machinery specialist with a 150-year pedigree, supplying companies all over the world with its engineering expertise. Italiana Coke is a major producer in the coke industry, established in 1994, and working with some of the world’s biggest industries, from brewing to metallurgy.
The Siemens order comes as part of a recent batch of export orders for the Leeds operation, including worldwide mines supplier Metso and major world operator MMD.
Italiana Coke operates a coke plant in San Guiseppe near Genoa, and selected the coke transfer car from JMH due to the quality of manufacture and prompt assembly of the component parts.
JMH’s control systems manager Ian Wilson said previously the motor, gearbox and brake had been separate components, and it made sense to use Siemens‘ fully integrated system: “We design our coke oven machinery in-house and have established an excellent reputation worldwide. It was therefore important to us to have a globally respected and recognised partner. We have also been able to save costs for our customer this way and we know the integrated Siemens units are very reliable.“
The Siemens bevel helical gear unit with hollow shaft and torque arm also has a second shaft on the rear of the unit. Each of the four units incorporates a Siemens IE2 braked motor and an encoder and they were supplied in one of the largest sizes Siemens manufacture: 168.
The coke transfer car removes the oven doors and guides the coke – which is at 1000 degrees C – from the ovens into a quench car. Emissions are controlled by a hooded extraction system.
Siemens area manager Bill Baxter said: “This is the latest in a number of projects we’ve supplied drive train units for to John M Henderson, and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to demonstrate savings and fuller integration of these units into the complete system. It’s an excellent example of Siemens partnering with another business to help increase their success in a key export market.“
