Siemens Creates Mural at Rothwell Victoria School
- Siemens Leeds team carries out school painting as part of Business in the Community project
Two teams from Siemens Mechanical Drives (MD) in Leeds have brightened up a classroom and created a mural for a local junior school.
Rothwell Victoria School teaches 141 pupils aged 7 to 11 and is one of the last junior schools in the Leeds area. The school was named after one of the now disused mine shafts, Victoria, situated just a few hundred metres away. The mine had originally been named after one of the mine owner’s daughters.
Siemens team leader Wendy Nicholson said the mural, which features a rainbow, was tricky to create, partly because it was in a narrow corridor, and also because, as she said: “We’re engineers rather than artists, but we designed it at our offices and then created it in a few hours while our other team was painting a large art room nearby.”
The mural was created by Wendy, along with company general manager Simon Nadin and engineer Adam France, while the large art classroom was painted in fresh new colours by team leader Michael Sharkey, Tony Sutcliffe and James Perigo.
The team hopes to return to the school later in the year to help tidy a woodland trail and dig over some school allotments.
Head teacher Pauline Ward was delighted with the mural and painting work: “We’re grateful to everyone at Siemens who helped out. It’s amazing how much can be done by a team of people. It’s really appreciated and we’re sure the children will enjoy the classroom and mural, too.”
