SIEMENS DONATES GEARED MOTORS TO BRADFORD COLLEGE STUDENTS
Acknowledging the support it receives from specialist engineering colleges in training its young apprentices to be tomorrow’s skilled engineers, Siemens Mechanical Drives (MD) has donated several geared motor units to Bradford College.
The modern units, some with inverters, were warmly welcomed by course lecturers Steve Sutcliffe, Neil Barker and Ray Lang, as they replace a selection of gear units that the College had been using for some years.
Part of the students’ hands-on training involves dismantling gearboxes, learning how they work, and finding faults (strategically created by lecturers and examiners).
Siemens supplied particularly appropriate gear units as several of its young apprentices have been through Bradford College courses, including recent award-winning apprentice Adam France. Adam returned to the college with Siemens production and quality manager Richard Durham to make the donations.
Lecturer Steve Sutcliffe commented: “These units will be very well used by our students, and are significantly more modern than the previous ones we had to work with. We’re grateful to Siemens for making them available to us and look forward to continuing to train future Siemens apprentices.”
General manager at the Siemens Mechanical Drives site at Leeds is Simon Nadin. He observed: “Both Bradford College and Siemens were established in the UK within a decade of each other, Bradford College 178 years ago and Siemens 169 years ago. Both are very well-established and both are playing a key role in training tomorrow’s UK engineers. We’re delighted to support the College in this way.”
Today Bradford College has around 4,000 students on 150 courses and Siemens has around 13,000 employees in the UK. The Siemens gear units will be used in the mechanical and electrical engineering workshops as well as in the electrical testing areas under examination conditions.
Siemens recently announced it would be recruiting 160 apprentices across the UK, in support of UK industry’s drive out of the economic recession.
