SIEMENS LEEDS FACTORY CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY WITH DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH

Siemens Mechanical Drives is celebrating its second anniversary in its state-of-the-art Leeds factory – with a strong order book and healthy growth. Over the past two years, the business has grown by 11%, largely due to a clear strategy targeting new markets and healthy exports.

Siemens Mechanical Drives relocated from its Bradford base to Leeds two years ago, as part of plans to spearhead growth and expand the business. The factory is a key part of Siemens Industry’s manufacturing operations, forming part of the UK-wide Drive Technologies business, and it employs 52 people, with plans to grow head count over the coming months.

The site was officially opened late last year by Leeds MP Hilary Benn.

Some of Mechanical Drives’ major customers include Metso, the international mining operations specialist and MMD, who manufacture some of the world’s largest mineral sizing stations, as well as increasing work with wind and tidal technology companies.

Managing director of Siemens Industry UK, Juergen Maier, said: “We are extremely proud of Mechanical Drives in Leeds – their strong growth is testament to the team’s in-depth understanding of our core domestic and export markets, as well as being at the cutting edge of innovation – particularly in the energy and transport sectors.”

Head of the Mechanical Drives factory, Simon Nadin confirmed the move had proved highly successful: “It was a major undertaking, as we assemble and service some of the largest gear units in the UK, but the increased scope we have at the new factory has enabled us to win bigger export orders all over the world as well as to service the domestic market in wind turbines and rail.”

The Leeds site also employs a number of young engineering apprentices – four are currently working there, along with two recent graduate apprentices. The four include the latest apprentice, Matthew Jackson, who joined Siemens in September as part of a 160-strong apprentice recruitment drive by Siemens in the UK.
