A team from Siemens Mechanical Drives has helped Fieldhead Junior, Infant and Nursery School at Birstall create a new sensory garden for pupils to enjoy.

The Siemens team comprised Paul Hawkin (team leader), Richard Thackray, Dave Pratt, Steve Stratton, Richard Birkbeck, Adam France and Mark Paley, who all work at the Siemens factory in Stourton.  Siemens Mechanical Drives is part of Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies.

Siemens and Fieldhead School have a longstanding relationship, with this project being selected by the CSR team as part of their drive to support the school in the redevelopment of its outdoor facilities.  The school, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment, has been developing its outdoor spaces in order to enhance the learning and teaching environment.

The team carried out work near the entrance of the school, helping to dig and tidy several areas of the new garden.  The garden was subsequently planted up by landscape gardeners and should be at its best in summer.

Head teacher Lianne Lomas was delighted with the finished garden: “The children are loving learning about planting and caring for a garden and have taken a lead in looking after the space.  They have an after-school gardening club and are very proud to have such a wonderful sensory garden to add to our fantastic school facilities.  Many thanks to all the team at Siemens and we look forward to building a strong community link for future projects.”

Siemens team leader Paul Hawkin said all involved had enjoyed helping to improve the school’s outdoor facilities and creating something for the pupils to learn from at the same time.
