Classic car auction raises £55,000 for Children In Need
Silverstone Auctions’ ‘Pride & Joy’ classic car sale, which formed part of the CarFest South extravaganza, has raised a fantastic £55,000 for the BBC’s Children in Need appeal. The auction resulted in the sale of 43 out of 70 stunning cars which were offered for sale on 25th and 26th August.
“We’re delighted that our efforts have helped to raise such an enormous amount of money for Children in Need,” comments Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “I’d really like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for getting into the spirit of the event. In true British fashion, even the odd Bank Holiday weekend downpour couldn’t dampen everyone’s enthusiasm or generosity, and the result has been truly amazing.”
CarFest is the brainchild of Radio 2 DJ and motoring fanatic Chris Evans and was held at former F1 world Champion Jody Scheckter’s Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire. As well as the classic car auction, the sell-out crowd of 15,000 visitors were treated to a host of family fun and entertainment including a hillclimb sprint, car galleries, a live action arena, air displays, a food festival and live music from bands including Texas and Razorlight.
One of the highlights of the ‘Pride & Joy’ sale saw Chris Evans himself take to the auction block, assuming the role of auctioneer for the sale of a 1964 Volkswagen Split Screen Dormobile Campervan. With all proceeds from the sale of this vehicle being generously donated to the charity by its owner Malcolm Railson, Evans finally brought the hammer down on a remarkable £33,550 telephone bid.
Others taking to the stage to help proceedings included former land speed record holder Richard Noble.
The charity is set to benefit even more from Silverstone Auctions’ expertise as the company will also be hosting a further sale at CarFest North on the 8th and 9th September at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire. Entries for the sale are still being invited and tickets for the weekend event are also available from Silverstone Auctions by calling 01926 691141.
“CarFest has really proved itself to be a fantastic weekend of family motoring fun,” concluded Whale. “We’re delighted to be have played a key part in it and are looking forward to helping raise our total even further at CarFest North in just under two weeks time.”
