1 Million Asbestos Items Surveyed by Redhills
Redhills (part of Silverdell PLC), has surveyed a milestone 1 million items.
Leading asbestos and environmental consultancy, Redhills has hit the 1 million mark for the number of items surveyed for asbestos. Using their partner software ‘Tracker’, Redhills hit the landmark figure at the end of October.
Redhills have been using the compliance management software ‘Tracker’ for over 6 years which has provided increased efficiency and utilisation within the business as well as improving the turnaround times and reporting for clients , with its unique end-to-end business proposition: from quotation to invoicing.
Redhills offer a full suite of asbestos software solutions from a bespoke asbestos management package to a full facilities management package with an asbestos module.
Kieran Moon, Commercial Director said: “To reach a million surveyed items is a real achievement for Redhills, we are able to automate the data capture process for all our clients, using tried-and-tested palmtop computers and smartphones. Data can be returned to the office within minutes of completion on site.”
He went on to say: “The surveyed data can be published on our compliance tracker system which facilitates access to all asbestos and other compliance-related data in an easily viewable and updatable format that is simple to navigate around.”
Any building built before 2000 is likely to contain asbestos, the HSE have previously estimated that 500,000 buildings in the UK could still contain asbestos.

Asbestos information
Breathing in air containing asbestos fibres can lead to asbestos-related diseases, mainly cancers of the lungs and chest lining.
Asbestos is only a risk to health if asbestos fibres are released into the air and breathed in. Past exposure to asbestos currently kills around 4000 people a year in Great Britain. This number is expected to go on rising at least until 2016. There is no cure for asbestos-related diseases.
There is usually a long delay between first exposure to asbestos and the onset of disease. This can vary from 15 to 60 years. Only by preventing or minimising these exposures now will asbestos-related disease eventually be reduced.
There are three main types of asbestos still found in premises. These are commonly called ‘blue asbestos’ (crocidolite), ‘brown asbestos’ (amosite) and ‘white asbestos’ (chrysotile). All of them are dangerous carcinogens, but blue and brown asbestos are more hazardous than white. You cannot identify them just by their colour.
Although it is now illegal to use asbestos in the construction or refurbishment of any premises, many thousands of tonnes of it were used in the past and much of it is still in place. As long as it is in good condition and is not being or going to be disturbed or damaged there is negligible risk. But if it is disturbed or damaged, it can become a danger to health, because asbestos fibres are released into the air and people may breathe them in.
