EDS is shortlisted for Sustainable Construction and Demolition Project of the year.

EDS, the decommissioning, demolition and dismantling specialists have been shortlisted at the CIWM Awards for Environmental Excellence 2012, within the sustainable construction and demolition category, for the demolition and site clearance project at a five-acre site in Speke, Liverpool on behalf of Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics.

The award sets out to recognise the sustainability of any construction project regardless of size, based on the management of materials during construction and, or the use of sustainable materials be they re-used, re-cycled or natural.

EDS Group Managing Director Darren Palin said:

“We hope our submission demonstrates our commitment to improving our corporate carbon footprint. We recently developed a carbon calculator for standard demolition activities. The calculator has been progressed following the guiding principles of the ‘Greenhouse Gas Protocol’. This is the most widely used international accounting tool for understanding, quantifying and managing greenhouse gas emissions.”

He went on to say:

“By applying our carbon calculator to Novartis project, we identified a carbon saving of 8,179 tonnes. Extensive information was collated on the use of plant, transport, utilities, welfare facilities and the quantities of waste recycled. This enabled us to determine the total carbon savings for the demolition and site clearance of the entire Site. The project was hailed as a great success, with zero lost time accidents and an incredible 98% of materials recovered going for recycling, resulting in a £500,000 rebate from the project costs.”

The Awards will take place on November 8th 2012 at the Grosvenor Square Marriott Hotel, London and will be hosted by Country File’s Julia Bradbury.
