Quick wins for University Estates/FM’s - 30% energy savings in halls of residence using eTRV

Controlling the cost of central heating by saving energy is a key issue tackled head on by the new eTRV.     This is an innovative, British-made thermostatic electronic radiator valve that has the potential to save on gas or oil central heating costs by typically between 15% and 30%. Higher Education and Further Education Estates and FM’s can make quick wins by installing this innovative new product.

A recent trial at Bristol University’s student halls of residence has led to savings of around 30% on heating costs, according to the University’s Sustainability Manager (Energy), Chris Jones.   The eTRVs were part of a refurbishment of the 53-room building, The Hawthorns.

According to the University’s Sustainability Manager (Energy), Chris Jones, the first trial installation of eTRVs in the Hawthorns, 53-room hall of residence has already been proved to save around 30% of heating costs. This saving is paying for the cost of the eTRVs within the first year of operation.

So Easy - Existing thermostatic radiator valves can be easily replaced by eTRV within minutes by simply unscrewing and replacing with eTRV.   If the property does not have thermostatic radiator valves then eTRV needs to be fitted professionally.

These British-made programmable valves from Chalmor Ltd have inbuilt features that provide full and individual heating control in both refurbishment and new build systems with no need for the high cost and investment in whole building management systems. A lock feature enables the energy team to fully program the valves to suit a specific room and user, locking it to prevent anyone tampering with the settings. However, students can press the grey button on the front of the eTRV for extra heat when they need it.

Chris Jones, from Bristol University said:

“The eTRVs are programmed to come on in the morning and evenings in our student accommodation, while being set to ECO during the day and to FROST at night. If students return early from lectures to find their rooms a little cold, they can press the push button on the front of eTRV to gain an hour of extra heat.” He adds, “The University of Bristol wishes to provide a comfortable environment while also making the lowest carbon impact. The combination of gas fired heating and the controllability afforded by the eTRV is helping us to achieve this goal.”

Robert Clubbe, Chalmor’s Sales & Marketing Manager said:

“We believe this is a remarkable validation of the energy and cost-saving benefits of the new eTRV, The Colleges and Universities will be preparing for refurbishment work and essential building maintenance over the summer months – we urge the FM’s and Property Maintenance Managers that are serious about saving energy and cutting energy bills to contact us and arrange a trial”

According to The Chartered Institute of Building around 60% of UK building work is refurbishment and home improvement work where the energy saving is a priority.   For both retrofit/refurbishment and for new-build projects, the new eTRV is a low cost option for Estates Managers and Facilities Managers to make quick wins when it comes to cost saving, energy efficiencies and carbon reduction.

This clever invention created by heating controls specialists, Chalmor Limited, makes it easy for the central heating radiators in each room to be individually and very flexibly operated by using the eTRV’s neat, slim remote controlled handset.
