Inverness schoolgirl wins helicopter flight with Santa

15 November 2011

An Inverness school girl is on cloud nine after winning a helicopter flight with Santa this weekend in a Christmas competition organised by the north’s biggest garden centre.

Kate Pedrana, a primary 2 pupil at Cradlehall Primary School in Inverness, has won a competition to design a charity Christmas card for Simpsons Garden Centre that bosses hope will inspire customers to dig deep in aid of a local charity that supports sick and vulnerable children.

Kate’s winning design will go on sale at the Inshes based garden centre this weekend, with 100% of the proceeds going to MFR’s Cash for Kids Appeal.

Kate will be the guest of honour at the opening of Santa’s grotto at Simpsons Garden Centre on Saturday (19 November) after her flying Angel design was chosen from more than 300 entries.

She and mum Sharon will fly with Santa in a PDG helicopter from Inverness Airport to Simpsons Garden Centre for a morning of festive fun at the centre, which has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland. Her school wins a Christmas tree and £200 vouchers to spend at Simpsons Garden Centre on environmental projects, or simply to enhance the school grounds.

Three runner-up designs – produced by Carly Goodwin, Milton of Leys Primary, Phoebe Drummond, Stratherrick Primary School and Eilidh O'Brien, Smithon Primary School – will also go on sale at Simpsons this Christmas.

Andrew Simpson, managing director of Simpsons Garden Centre, said: “We were absolutely inundated with entries and with so many quality entries, it was extremely difficult to pick a winner. However, we were really impressed with Kate’s Angel design, and with the three other cards that will go on sale. We hope that shoppers will dig deep and support this fantastic cause. All of the proceeds will go to support the Cash for Kids appeal, which does tremendous work with sick and vulnerable children.”

Lyndsay Rose from Cash for Kids said: “We are extremely grateful to Simpsons Garden Centre for their generous support, and to the many schools who took part in this wonderful competition in aid of Cash for Kids.”
