Chrysler Launches 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with SinterCast-CGI V6 Diesel Engine
* Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine launched at Geneva Motor
Show
* Cylinder block and bedplate produced in SinterCast-CGI at Tupy foundry in
Brazil
* Engine designed and assembled by VM Motori in Italy
[Geneva, 1 March 2011] - Following the launch of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand
Cherokee on 1 October 2010 at the Paris Auto Show, Chrysler Group LLC has today
introduced the diesel version of the vehicle for the European market at the
Geneva International Motor Show. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee becomes the first
vehicle in the Chrysler Group to be available with a Compacted Graphite Iron
(CGI) diesel engine. The 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine, providing 240 horsepower
(59 kW/litre), 550 Nm of torque and 8.3 litres/100km (28 mpg) on the combined
cycle, was designed and developed by VM Motori of Italy, a specialist diesel
engine manufacturer jointly owned by General Motors and Chrysler. The cylinder
block and bedplate of the engine are produced in Compacted Graphite Iron at the
Tupy foundry in Brazil using the SinterCast process control technology. The CGI
design allows for a compact engine package, with overall dimensions of just
695mm in length, 729mm in width and 698mm in height. Foundry production began
during mid-2010 in order to fill the supply chain and to make vehicles available
for the European dealer network.
"Having supported CGI product development and niche volume production for both
Fiat and Chrysler, and building on our long-standing technical relationship with
VM Motori, we are delighted with the launch of this series production programme"
said Dr. Steve Dawson, President & CEO of SinterCast. "The European Jeep Grand
Cherokee becomes the twenty-eighth vehicle to be offered to the market with a
SinterCast-CGI engine and Jeep becomes the twelfth car brand to embrace the
SinterCast technology in series production. The initial ramp-up has been
successfully concluded and we look to supporting the ongoing series production
with our partners at Tupy and VM Motori."
