SOHO FOOD FEAST June 25: Where education is the food of life

Report this content

Soho has been known for many years as the beating heart of London’s restaurant scene. On Saturday June 25 a stellar array of chefs are coming together in one location to help raise funds for the Soho Parish School. The inspiration for the first ever Soho Food Feast emerged when chef Margot Henderson of St John was speaking with the staff of Soho Parish School, where her children attended, about helping them continue with their excellent work of after school clubs and healthy eating.

Margot galvanised her many friends in the restaurant world to come together for a day of food and fun right in the centre of Soho. The chefs and restaurants responded enthusiastically and thus the Soho Food Feast was born.

In the afternoon of Saturday June 25 some of London’s celebrated chefs will come together in St Anne’s Church Gardens, W1 to share their delicious food for everyone to taste. The inaugural Soho Food Feast gives the opportunity for visitors to taste the many delicious cuisines that each chef is bringing for the day. French and fusion, modern British and Venetian are just a few of the diverse selections - all in the one location. No waiting months for a table at The Ivy or a seat at the bar at HIX, just buy a ticket to the Soho Food Feast.

Restaurants from St John to Kopapa, Groucho Club and The Ivy, Terroirs to HIX are just a small selection of the high calibre on offer during the afternoon helping to raise much needed funds for the Soho Parish School.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Margot Henderson of St John Restaurant and Hotel said:

“Soho is a land of opportunity.  All the time my children were at school there I always felt the local businesses could be supporting their local children. And it's such a great way to bring the community together.  The restaurant world is my world so I began approaching chefs and the response was incredible, they all want to get stuck in and have a great food happening.   We are hoping that relationships will build and flourish, that the children will see that the world around them cares enough to invest in their futures.  The love of food and gatherings can help make a change. I really believe The Soho Food Feast is the beginning of something new for the area.”

Rachel Earnshaw – Headteacher of Soho Parish School said : “ The Soho Food Feast is a brilliant initiative from local restaurateurs who recognise the need for Soho to continue to have its own thriving primary school at the heart of the community. The funds raised will help us to carry on providing high quality healthy lunches and lots of sporting and other activities before and after school.”

The school runs a ‘creative curriculum’ and parents and children comment that learning is fun at our school. Soho is a small school. Our Victorian building has a tiny playground and limited inside space. Our classrooms are too small for more than 22 pupils, so our classes are not typical of state school sizes. This means the school can work very closely with pupils and families and all the staff knows every child by name. We are often described by parents and children as a ‘family’.”

Ofsted recently said of Soho Parish School (March 2011):

“This is a good school, where all pupils are greatly valued. It plays an important part in the life of the local community. An outstanding feature of the school is its highly effective way of making extensive use of the many cultural and other opportunities in its locality to broaden the learning experiences and personal development of its pupils. As one pupil’s parents put it: ‘We feel the school is a warm and welcoming place and it provides a really exciting and stimulating curriculum.”
