The British man prefers a tie

St James’s and Jermyn Street are synonymous with the shirt and tie.  Beau Brummell, the dandy of St James’s is credited with giving us the shirt and tie combo that we know today. Among the tie makers that call St James’s home are Harvie & Hudson and Turnbull & Asser.

Richard Harvie the 3rdgeneration of the Harvie family at the shirt and tie makers Harvie Hudson, since 1949, says that he has seen the sales of ties increase considerably in the last two years. Richard says: “From where I am standing British men continue to wear ties. Through the window on the world of menswear, in London's Jermyn Street, St James’s, if anything the neckwear seems to be enjoying a great renaissance. This is not restricted to the standard tie. We are also noticing an upturn in the sales of bow ties and even cravats. The tie is a great way to distinguish oneself, a point that has not been missed by most of our customers over the years. The news of the demise of the gentleman's tie is perhaps somewhat exaggerated.”

Also on Jermyn Street, Turnbull & Asser, British shirt and tie makers to HRH Prince of Wales, have been making shirts and ties for over 125 years and confirm that business is booming with a new generation of tie wearers seeking out ties, from classic silk to this season’s knitted cashmere. Michael Fish from Turnbull & Asser invented the kipper tie much favoured by footballers such as George Best in the 1970s and seemingly every man in Britain during its fashion moment.

Steven Quin from Turnbull & Asser, says; “We are very excited to see so many young customers embracing the quintessential British look for gentleman. We have customers ranging from Royalty to rap stars and it certainly has a great deal to do with fashion culture“

In times of austerity perhaps the tie is one of the perfect ways to change and update one’s immediate look when worn with a plain shirt.
