British construction industry cites Öresund Bridge for international award The Öresund Bridge won the British construction industry's award for the best international project in 2000. All parties in the project - namely the Skanska-managed Sundlink Contractors consortium, the Öresund Consortium customer and its representative Ove Arup & Partners - received the British Construction Industry Award 2000. In making the award, the jury cited "outstanding innovation in design and construction . completed early and to budget." The approximately 8-kilometer-long Öresund Bridge was transferred to the Öresund Consortium in March this year, three months ahead of schedule. The bridge was opened for traffic on July 1 by HM Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and HM Margrethe of Denmark. Skanska managed and held a 37% interest in the international consortium Sundlink Contractors, which was responsible for design and construction of the bridge. The bridge was completed well within budget and met the strict environmental demands placed on the project. Implementation of the large and technically complex project was characterized by high standards and innovative technology and method solutions. Most of the bridge elements were prefabricated in specially equipped bridge plants. The entire process was highlighted by exact quality and environmental control and with an open approach to providing information to the customer as well as the approximately 1,400 employees. The Öresund Bridge shares the award with the tunnel link portion of the project. The British Embassy in Moscow, which was constructed by Skanska, was also among the 39 construction projects nominated, from a total of 194 submitted.
