Environmental certification for entire Skanska Group All of Skanska's operations - from head office to subsidiaries - have now introduced environmental management systems that are certified in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001. Skanska is the first global company in the construction-related services and project development sector to environmentally certify all operations within the entire group. Skanska's environmental management system is applied to the entire value chain, from concept and design to construction, service, operation and maintenance. At the same time, certification means that Skanska can offer services provided by environmentally certified units - from Hong Kong in the east to the US in the west. "Now we have the documentary evidence to show that we can develop, build and operate residential properties, workplaces and infrastructural installations in an environmentally correct and sustainable manner," says Axel Wenblad, Skanska's Vice President, Environmental Affairs. "This in turn means that we can offer added value to our customers, users and investors, as well as giving us an advantage vis-à-vis our competitors." An environmental management system is a management tool based on an ongoing program of environmental planning, implementation and follow-up, with a requirement for continual improvements. All of these features are examined regularly by an external, independent certification body, such as Det Norske Veritas. Skanska's head office is the first head office of a major company in Sweden to have its own certified environmental management system. In a number of markets, Skanska's various subsidiaries are the first construction companies to introduce certified environmental management systems. Several units within Skanska Sweden's Industry division were the first to be certified, while the whole of Skanska USA completed certification as early as autumn 1999. Companies that have recently been certified include Skanska Finland Oy and Skanska East Europe Oy, which received certification for quality and work environment at the same time. Sade Skanska of Argentina, which was acquired in 1999, now has certification for all of its units. Skanska decided in 1998 to introduce certified environmental management systems throughout the Group. Units subsequently acquired will introduce certified environmental management systems within two years of being acquired.
