Skanska consortium to design and construct highway in South Carolina for USD 232 million, SEK 2 billion Skanska's US subsidiary Tidewater Skanska has been awarded a contract to design and build a 32-kilometer (20-mile) highway, including 29 bridges, in South Carolina in the US. The order is valued at USD 232 million, about SEK 2,004 million. Tidewater Skanska's share is 35% and the customer is the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The contract is being carried out in a 65/35 consortium with Flatiron Structures, under the name Palmetto Transportation Constructors (PTC). PTC is responsible for designing and construction of the project on an aggressive fast-track schedule of 30 months. The new highway will connect SC Route 9 to US Route 501 in Horry County, South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach and the Intracoastal Waterway. The procurement process required proposers to provide maximum scope for the fixed budget of USD 232 million. The Tidewater Skanska consortium not only provided for the entire scope of items listed by the customer, but also offered additional items to enhance the transportation system in the entire area. PTC also assumed responsibility for securing a significant amount of right-of-way. Protection of the fragile coastal marsh environment is also being given high priority. A pile-supported roadway is planned across sensitive marsh areas with over-the-top construction techniques are being utilized to protect the wetlands. The infrastructure market in the US is increasing as a result of the TEA 21 development program. Skanska's documented expertise in this area has now resulted in new major contracts. Slattery Skanska and Koch Skanska recently received a highway contract in New York valued at USD 228 million. In total, Skanska has now landed new highway projects for a total of USD 309 million during the past week.
