Skanska-MasTec alliance scores breakthrough in new area within Internet infrastructure, with order valued at about SEK 2,5 billion Skanska is designing and constructing new product types in the IT segment. The alliance between Skanska and US-based data and telecom infrastructure provider MasTec, has been assigned responsibility for the design, project management and construction of 35 co-location centers for data switches in the US , with an order value of about SEK 2,5 billion. The contract is the first phase of a planned establishment of slightly more than 200 co-location centers, which vary in size from about 1,500 sq. m. (15,000 sq. ft.) to 3,000 sq. m. (30,000 sq. ft.). The cost per center is estimated at USD 6-10 M. The co-location concept gives Internet users the possibility to choose among several network operators. Through co-location in e-centers, the users can select the most cost-efficient operator. The concept is also expected to gain ground in Europe. With reference to the rules of the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) in the US, Skanska cannot at the moment disclose the name of the customer. This is the second major contract won by Skanska and MasTec since the companies formed an alliance in November 1999. "Establishment of co-location centers for data switches is a growing market segment that offers major opportunities for Skanska-MasTec" said Stuart Graham, Skanska USA's President. "We expect to receive a number of new assignments in this area."
