Skanska recognized by US Environmental Protection Agency for environmental achievements Three Skanska companies in the US - Beacon Skanska, Beers Skanska and Sordoni Skanska - were recently recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for outstanding compliance and information efforts in the environmental field. The three companies were accepted as charter members in the EPA's National Environmental Achievement Track Program that recognizes environmental leaders in the public and private sectors. Beacon Skanska, Beers Skanska and Sordoni Skanska were the only construction services companies selected for membership. The EPA program recognizes companies and organizations that have voluntarily exceeded the requirements of environmental laws and regulations. The program aims to increase awareness of exceptional efforts and to stimulate continued innovation to support long-term sustainable development. Charter members of the Environmental Achievement Track Program were selected based upon their outstanding efforts to protect public health and the environment. In addition, the program places heavy emphasis on willingness to increase public awareness and share information with communities. "Selection by the EPA is recognition of Skanska's knowledge and commitment in the environmental field," comments Axel Wenblad, Vice President Environmental Affairs, at Skanska AB. "The Skanska companies were the first in the US construction market to institute environmental management systems certified in accordance with ISO 14001. Since last year, this system has been established throughout the Group - from the head office to the subsidiaries. This effort is aimed at Skanska being an environmental leader and at offering added value to customers, users and investors. Our intention is to exceed environmental laws and regulations as well as customer expectations while at the same time continuously increasing our environmental know-how and improving our environmental management systems," concludes Axel Wenblad. Included on the list of 225 companies and organizations selected as charter members in the EPA Environmental Achievement Track Program are Bristol-Myers Squibb, Canon, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, IBM, Johnson and Johnson, JVC, Motorola, NASA, Novartis, Pfizer, Philips and Unilever.
