Skanska has signed a design-build contract to construct a 16 kilometer extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Skanska is leading a joint venture with Shimmick Construction and Herzog Contracting Corporation. Skanska has a 45 percent share of the contract, which amounts to USD 347 M, about SEK 2.2 billion. The customer is Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). The order will be included in the bookings for Skanska USA Civil in the fourth quarter.

The project extends the heavy rail rapid transit system to San Jose, California. The extension includes two stations, six at-grade crossings and two above grade crossings. The project’s alignment proceeds from Warm Springs Station in Fremont and ends in the City of San Jose. Work will commence in February 2012 and is planned to be completed in spring 2016.

Skanska USA is one of the leading development and construction companies in the country, consisting of four business units: Skanska USA Building, which specializes in building construction; Skanska USA Civil, specialized in civil infrastructure; Skanska Infrastructure Development, which develops public-private partnerships; and Skanska Commercial Development, which develops commercial development projects in select U.S. markets.
