Skanska secures new US contracts worth USD 222 M Skanska USA receives three new civil construction projects valued at USD 222 M. The orders are included in the order bookings for the fourth quarter 2000. Skanska has been awarded a contract by the New York Power Authority for the construction of power production plants to provide additional capacity to prevent power outages during summer months. The additional capacity will come in the form of over 300 MWs in total generated at seven different sites throughout New York City. The value of the project is over USD 100 M. The assignment will be completed during 2001. Skanska, in a joint venture with Perini Corporation, has been selected to perform a USD 54 M contract to construct a 3.8 mile extension of the right of way for New Jersey Transit's Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System. The team is performing site work, hazardous soil remediation, relocation of 11,000 linear feet of existing Conrail freight track, as well as construction of a 1,100-foot caisson-supported viaduct structure. Other civil activities include grading and preparation of the subgrade for future light rail track construction. Tidewater Skanska and CDK Skanska have been selected and are currently finalizing a USD 95 M contract with Holnam Inc. to construct a cement plant in Holly Hill, South Carolina. Work is expected to begin in early 2001. The customer is an American subsidiary of Holderbank, a Swiss company. Since 1998, Skanska has been building cement plants for this customer in Utah and Colorado. The new assignment comprises a complete production facility, plus silos for storage. The plant, which will have a capacity of 6,000 ton per day, will be built in accordance with the most recent environmental standards to reduce emissions and consumption of energy. The overall construction market is still strong in the U.S. for Skanska and shows no sign of a slow-down. The recent slow-down of the telecom sector has led to a postponement and alteration of the RCN-contract, but the effects of that has been included in the numbers already released in the quarterly reports for year 2000. A strong growth in other market segments and the earnings from the new projects will more than offset the loss in income from the slow-down of the capital expenditures on the RCN account.
