Skanska signs contract to extend prison building in London, UK, worth GBP 34 M, about SEK 350 M

Skanska has been awarded the contract to build the next phase of custodial development HMP Thameside in south London, UK. The project client is Serco, working on behalf of the UK government’s Ministry of Justice. The contract is worth GBP 34 M, about SEK 350 M, and will be included in order bookings for Skanska UK for the fourth quarter of 2013.

Skanska completed the existing prison buildings at the beginning of 2012. The project was noted for its green credentials. The main living unit was the first prison building to achieve a BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Outstanding rating. The other nine buildings all achieved BREEAM Excellent. The extension is also designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent.

The work starts in January 2014 and is set to conclude in August 2015.

Skanska UK reported revenues of about SEK 12 billion in 2012. It has around 5,000 employees. The company is active in building and civil construction, utilities and building services, as well as facilities management and commercial development.
