Skanska to construct broadband and power network in Hong Kong for SEK 400 M Skanska has been contracted to design, build and install power and fiber- optical cables in Hong Kong. The order is valued at HKD 360 million, about SEK 400 million. The customer is the privately owned China Light and Power, the main power supplier in Hong Kong. The contract involves 25 km of power cables and 10 km of fiber-optical cables to connect the Lantua and Ma Wan islands with the mainland. The cables will be installed in six micro tunnels with diameters of about 50 cm. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) for cable installation is being used for the first time in Hong Kong. The 1,350-meter section across the Ma Wun Channel is one of the longest HDD crossings in the world. At the deepest point, the tunnels will extend 100 meters below ground level. "We see that the demand for reliable and rapid infrastructure projects in the field of power and communications is rising sharply. With the HDD technique we can build networks over large areas without disturbing the environment," says Bo Söderström, Area Manager, Skanska Hong Kong.
