Skanska to construct two prisons in Scotland - contracts valued at SEK 514 M, (GBP 40 M) Skanska has secured an assignment to construct another two house blocks at prisons in Scotland for a total of SEK 514 M (GBP 40 M). The customer is the Scottish Prison Service. The contract is included in the order bookings for the third quarter of 2003. The projects are the third and fourth to be constructed by Skanska within the framework agreement signed with the customer two years ago. Skanska has recently completed two prison extensions in Falkirk and Edinburgh, together providing space for an additional 440 detainees. The foundation for Skanska's success in constructing these new houseblocks for prisons in Scotland was laid between 1996 and 2001, during which five major prisons were completed under PFI in England and Scotland. This was followed by the signing of the current framework agreement. The agreement includes continual improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs, through such measures as the use of prefabricated components and long-term cooperation with subcontractors. The new prison extensions in Edinburgh and Glenochil, which are to provide additional space for approximately 660 detainees, represent one step in an approved plan for an extensive development of Scottish prisons. Work will commence within shortly and is scheduled for completion during 2005. Skanska has also constructed six prisons within the UK's private finance initiative (PFI) program. Skanska is the largest contractor within the PFI-sector in UK.
