Skanska to expand British correctional facility for GBP 53 M, about SEK 680 M

Skanska has been awarded a contract for the design and construction of an expansion to the British HMP Dovegate training prison in Staffordshire, England. The contract amount is GBP 53 M, about SEK 680 M, which is included in order bookings for the first quarter of 2008. The customer is Serco, operator of the facility.

The project involves construction of a 260-cell housing block and a two-storey activities building, within an increased secure area. Work also includes the expansion and renovation of existing buildings as well as construction of two-five-a-side soccer fields. Skanska is also undertaking the structural, civil design, mechanical and electrical management and installation for the new building.

Work will begin in February, with completion scheduled for early 2010.

Skanska was also responsible for the design and construction of the existing 800-place prison, which was originally completed in 2001.

Skanska UK reported revenues of SEK 12.3 billion in 2006, with about 5,500 employees. The company is active in building and civil construction, utilities and building services. Skanska is also a leader in the British program for private public partnerships, PFI (Private Finance Initiative).
