Skanska to expand Manchester Airport for SEK 340 M (GBP 22.7 M) Skanska UK has secured the contract to build a new passenger transfer interchange at Manchester Airport in the UK. The order is worth GBP 22.7 M, or about SEK 340 M. The customer is Manchester Airport. The new passenger hub will link the flight terminals with the train, light rail and bus terminals. The 4,000 sq.m. interchange center, which will feature passenger check-in and baggage-handling facilities, will be fully integrated with the existing flight terminals. The order also includes a bus terminal and a 12,000 sq.m. office building. The aim of the project is to meet the anticipated increase in the number of passengers using the airport, from the current 19 million to nearly 41 million by 2015. Construction work has now started, with completion set for June 2002. Skanska, which is building the shell and core of the new hub, also took part in the design stage, during which it contributed to reducing the total cost of the project by GBP 1.5 M, or SEK 22 M. Including installations and fittings, the value of the project is estimated to total about GBP 60 M, or about SEK 900 M. Earlier, Skanska built the Radisson SAS Hotel, which is adjacent to Manchester Airport and close to the new hub.
