Skanska to rehabilitate New York Expressway for USD 228 million, SEK 2 billion Slattery Skanska and Koch Skanska, Skanska's US subsidiaries, have secured a contract for the reconstruction of roadway, overpass bridges and approach ramps along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York. The order is valued at slightly more than USD 228 M, or approximately SEK 1,980 M. The customer is the New York State Department of Transportation. The reconstruction of the Expressway is aimed at improving safety conditions and enhancing the flow of traffic on the aging structure, which is one of the nation's busiest transportation corridors. A stretch of two miles, approximately three kilometers, through Queens is to be widened and aligned. The assignment also includes the demolition of 19 bridges, and the new construction of 15 road bridges and two railroad bridges. It also comprises the lowering of transversing roads and the relocation of a stretch of railroad. In addition, drainage systems and other utilities will be upgraded. Slattery Skanska has over 70 years of experience in performing infrastructure projects, primarily in the northeastern part of the US. The company currently has an order backlog of USD 1 billion. Slattery Skanska is currently involved in two express railway projects - the JFK Light Rail project to JFK Airport in New York and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail project in New Jersey. Major rehabilitation is being carried out at the Times Square subway station in New York City and on the Central Artery highway in Boston. In San Francisco, Slattery Skanska is designing and constructing an extension of the BART subway. For almost a century, Koch Skanska has specialized in bridge construction in the New York metropolitan area and currently has a backlog of USD 150 million. Koch Skanska is rehabilitating the Williamsburg Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing, two bridges located in New York City. The firm is also performing the last phase of the Newark Airport Monorail, which will link the Northeast Corridor to the Airport. Slattery Skanska and Koch Skanska are part of Skanska USA, which had sales of SEK 35 billion in 1999. The order backlog increased by 56 percent during the year and amounted to SEK 67 billion at year-end 1999.
