Two Skanska companies become first building and heavy civil engineering companies in the U.S to be certified for ISO 14

Two Skanska companies become first building and heavy civil engineering companies in the U.S to be certified for ISO 14 001 registration Skanska's American subsidiaries Beers Construction Company and Tidewater Skanska have been environmentally registered. Both companies are the first to gain such recognition for establishing environmental management systems within their sectors of the American construction market. Beers is the first American building company and Tidewater Skanska is the first American heavy civil engineering company whose environmental management systems have been registered in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001. Certification for ISO 14001 registration of each of the Skanska companies is part of Skanska's commitment to worldwide environmental concerns. All units in the Group are planning to be environmentally certified during 2000. Several units are already certified in Sweden and throughout Europe as well as Hong Kong. "Through planning and carrying out construction in an environmentally sensitive manner, we can create added value, for our customers as well as for society as a whole," says Axel Wenblad, Vice President Environmental Affairs at Skanska. "Accordingly, we are establishing environmental know-how through the entire building process, from physical planning, to design and construction. Atlanta-based Beers Construction Company is one of the leading companies in the building market in the southeastern U.S. The company has annual sales of SEK 11.4 billion. The companies in Tidewater Skanska group are active in industrial, heavy civil engineering and marine construction, mainly in the southeastern and southwestern U.S. Tidewater Skanska posted annual sales in 1998 amounting to about SEK 2 billion. Skanska USA is the fifth largest building company in the domestic U.S. construction market. In June 1999, Skanska's American operations had an order backlog of SEK 59 billion.
