Gothenburg, Sweden, 04 June 2014: This summer, millions of football fans will gather and watch the FIFA World Cup finals in July. SKF started the football season already in March, with the Meet the World tournaments which take place in 24 countries this year. In July, these young football players gather for Gothia Cup, where the SKF teams have a chance to make it to the finals and be a star for a day.

“We are delighted with the partnership we have developed with the Gothia Cup over the years and with the Meet the World tournaments which we started in 2007. Meet the World gives even more kids from a variety of different backgrounds the opportunity to play football and to come to Gothenburg and compete with teams from over 75 countries. Together, these two tournaments give kids around the world a chance to realize their dreams,” says Tom Johnstone, SKF President and CEO.

Be the star of tomorrow
The theme for this year’s SKF Meet the World is "Be the star of tomorrow", and SKF hopes that taking part in this very special event will inspire kids from all over the world to make the most of their potential. SKF is launching a Facebook application that lets anyone feel like a football star by generating a football card from the user’s profile picture.

“The app is open to everyone and we expect and encourage football enthusiasts from all over the world to upload their photo and create their own, personalized card,” says Julia Persdotter, Global Project Leader for the SKF Meet the World Tournaments.

Global gathering in Gothenburg, Sweden
The SKF Meet the World football tournaments 2014 are held in 24 countries where SKF employees give back to their communities by organizing the SKF tournaments. They take place from March–June and the winning teams from each country travel to Gothenburg to participate in the Gothia Cup. For the third year in a row SKF will also arrange a Meet the World tournament in France for children with special needs, with winners travelling to Gothenburg to play for the Kim Källström Trophy.

Gothia Cup, the largest youth football tournament in the world provides an opportunity for young people to play on the world stage and compete against teams from across the globe. This year, over 1600 teams with more than 37,000 kids and teenagers will play over 4500 games on 110 playing fields. The final games are played before an audience of over 40,000 spectators – an audience many adult football teams only dream about.
