The Gothia Cup global youth football tournament starts today with more than 1700 teams from 80 nations playing 4500 matches in and around SKF’s home city of Gothenburg, Sweden. SKF is the main partner to the Gothia Cup, the world’s largest youth football tournament.

Collaborating closely with the Gothia Cup team, SKF has helped to develop the tournament over the 12 years it has been involved. With a capacity of 8000 spectators, the SKF Arena on Heden is the main arena for the tournament and, thanks to SKF, supporters all over the world can follow their friends and family members through free livestreaming of matches.

This year, SKF has again run ”Meet The World” qualifying tournaments to give even more children from a variety of different backgrounds the opportunity to play football and to come to Gothenburg to meet new friends from around the world. The tournaments are part of SKF Care, where SKF employees give back to their communities by organizing the tournaments. This year, around 450 children from 28 teams from 27 countries will participate in Gothia Cup as part of SKF Meet The World.

“Gothia Cup is our largest corporate sponsorship initiative and we are incredibly proud to be the main partner for the event. Gothia Cup represents teamwork, responsibility, equal opportunities and a commitment to the world’s youth. Through our partnership and our “Meet the World” tournaments, SKF and our staff around the world continue to provide help and support the development of young people’s interest in football. Bringing these youngsters together in our beautiful home city of Gothenburg is so much fun to be involved in,” says André Sulentic, SKF Project Leader for Gothia Cup and Meet the World.

This year, more than 41 000 girls and boys from 82 countries are expected to come to Gothenburg from 16 to 21 July, to compete in the Gothia Cup. From its start in 1975, the Gothia Cup has had around 1,1 million participants from 146 countries.

About Meet the World
SKF has been organizing its local Meet the World tournaments around the world since 2007. The idea is to give more young people, irrespective of their culture, gender, religion or colour, the opportunity to travel to Gothenburg, to take part in the Gothia Cup and meet young people from other countries.

SKF has a presence in all countries where the local tournaments take place, and so far over 200 Meet the World tournaments have been held in 42 countries involving around 26,000 participants. 4000 young people have been to Gothenburg as members of winning teams to compete in the summer events.
