The pine lamp – a bright new take on an old favourite

For most people, the pine lamp is synonymous with the 1970s. This year, final year students at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies in Sweden were tasked with producing eight groundbreaking lamps in Swedish pine that are fit for life in 2016. The project is a collaboration between Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies, lighting company Ateljé Lyktan and Swedish Wood.

Applying their experimental work on light, the students at the school of furniture design have made their design ideas come to life in the Woodlights project. Swedish Wood provided Swedish pine for the project and the result has been eight exciting light fittings for both private and public settings.

“I think the students have made incredibly interesting and innovative use of the Swedish pine. The lamps showcase the many opportunities offered by the material and its attractive, natural surface. We’re becoming increasingly aware of environmental issues, and I believe more people are going to choose furniture and fittings in wood in the future, since it’s a renewable material,” comments Charlotte Dedye Apelgren, Director of Interior and Design at Swedish Wood.

Swedish Wood has worked with Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies before. At a seminar organised by Swedish Wood in spring 2015, the students presented their work on the theme of how pine can be brushed, stained and painted to change its colour and texture. See photos of the project.
