Architect to the Stars and Hampstead-Knightsbridge Millionaires, sells his Peckham Rye Showcase House
High net worth clients from Hampstead Garden Suburb down to Knightsbridge use architect David Hingamp to extend style and swish their multi million pound designer homes. So when David told his then girlfriend he wanted to move from plush Marylebone to Peckham, seven years ago, to live and open a show room for his work, she was apprehensive, to say the least.
GJM David Hingamp case studyDavid explains: “When Bella, now my wife, realised I wasn’t joking, she was reluctant to move to Peckham and thought my clients wouldn’t come down there to see my work. Luckily, she came to love Peckham and my clients did come to visit. Over half of my clients are still from North London and they still travel down to Peckham to see our show case home.
“For me, the idea of a superb house in what was then a neglected part of London, would be a great contrast, and would impress upon my clients the extent of what creative architecture can achieve.
“We bought our three bedroom house in Bellenden Road, Peckham Rye for just £350.000 and spent a further £250,000 making it look and feel amazing. It became my show case for all the design ideas, clever use of glazing and new materials that I use in my clients’ multi million pound houses in North London”.
Since the move, David and Bella have turned their house into a wow-factor show piece, boasting extraordinary and ingenious features at every turn.
David explains: “At the time, our newly designed house was unusual in Peckham. It might even have been the first in our area to have extensive floor glazing, a cinema room and a purpose-built wine cellar; but that was part of its charm for me. There was always a great vibe here, and a burgeoning arts scene, but I had no idea Peckham would become so cool and so popular.”
Features include triple glazed structural glazing, for acoustic and thermal insulation, a temperature controlled wine cellar, a cinema room, integrated sound system, eight independently controlled under floor heating zones, generous amounts of built-in storage, a rain water harvester, water softener and filtered drinking water, and low voltage lighting. Planning consent is also in place to build a separate glazed studio at the rear of the garden.
David and Bella now have two young children, and they are selling their fabulous Bellenden Road home through GJM Property for £1,050,000.
David commented: “We will miss Peckham a lot. It’s a brilliant area which has so much that we love, but is still unknown enough to give value for money. As it becomes better known for its new fast train link into central London* and its very special arts scene, café culture, boutiques and amenities, the prices will soon catch up with the rest of residential London. Until then, it still offers a lot of house for your money.
