Around one in 25 divorced men and women in the UK may have missed out on thousands of pounds if their ex-partners’ pensions were undervalued during their divorce settlement.

Specialist divorce and pension consultancy, Divorce LifeLine, estimates that it is possible that up to half of the 1.5 million divorces that have taken place in the UK since December 2000* may not have had the pension professionally valued by a financial expert. It is possible that many of those people are entitled to more money, even though their divorces have been settled.

Divorce LifeLine is now working with divorcees in Britain to investigate if they are eligible to claim back the money they may be due.

Tony Derbyshire, founder and partner, Divorce LifeLine, explains: “Pensions are complex financial assets and calculating their true value for a divorce settlement is difficult. What we have discovered in 96% of the divorce settlements we have looked at, is that divorce lawyers have not commissioned the expert advice of an independent financial advisor (IFA) or actuary to get an accurate valuation of the pension. In such a situation it is possible that the valuation was wrong, leaving thousands of people out of pocket.”

In these circumstances, Divorce LifeLine will investigate the merits of pursuing a claim for the extra money on the divorcee’s behalf, against their former solicitors. It is important to note that this claim will not involve the divorcee’s ex spouse at all.

Tony adds: “Many clients need assistance recovering from the emotional and financial losses they have suffered as a result of a divorce. We are pleased to be able to help provide them with full guidance and investigate for them whether or not they may have lost money that is rightfully theirs.”

Many of these cases are in progress and Divorce LifeLine is currently working to retrieve many thousands of pounds for clients from all over the UK.

People divorced after December 2000 may be entitled to claim if their ex-partner had a pension. They can contact Divorce LifeLine on: 01483 449612 or visit www.divorcelifeline.co.uk
