Press release from Wooster & Stock ( 020 8613 0060  www.woosterstock.co.uk)
Date of Issue: 05 December 2011

Kirkdale Village businesses will transform into DIY performance spaces, community centres will magic up Christmas craft workshops and Kirkdale pubs and restaurants will sparkle with community spirit this December, as Kirkdale Village traders host a Christmas Pop Up event, from 7pm to 9pm on Friday 9th December and all day on Saturday 10th December.

To live is to learn, or so they say and Kirkdale businesses and community groups have joined with local people to offer taster adult learning classes this Christmas, after the Kirkdale Adult Learning Centre was recently closed. Interested residents can try free 45-minute introduction classes in cooking, art and performance, having fun with kids, dance, design, keeping fit, family learning, fashion and textiles.

The Kirkdale Village Christmas Pop Up is led by Hugh Dames of Here-There. Hugh created the Pop Up community event format used in last year's highly successful Forest Hill Pop Up, which he delivered in partnership with the Forest Hill Society.

Hugh comments: "Kirkdale Village is a really creative community and this event is an opportunity for our little high street to showcase this. This is a chance for our high street businesses to support the wealth of local interests, skills and talents, for the local community to support our high street, and for us all to support new opportunities that will help to keep community learning as a vibrant part of out Village.

"As well as attending on the Saturday, we'd love people to drop by our Launch Party on Friday 9th December, where they will be able to meet the Pop Up providers over a hog roast and mulled wine and even try preview sessions in drumming, hula hooping, singing and more.”

The day will be divided into five one-hour streams and part of the fun will be in the people of Kirkdale and Lewisham dipping that toe in and trying that something which they have always wanted to learn how to do! The timetable and full information on all workshops can be found on the dedicated website at http://kirkdalepopup.here-there.net <http://kirkdalepopup.here-there.net/>

Some 20 local shops and other venues have offered space for the Kirkdale Village Christmas Pop Up. Events on the day will include:

  • Hula-hooping (Grove Centre)
  • Drumming (Foxes Pub)
  • Free 10-min massages (Alhambra Home & Garden)
  • Singing workshops (Kirkdale Express Dry Cleaners)
  • Latin Dance (En Vogue)
  • Botanical Drawing (Century Motors)
  • Charity Fashion Show (Costcutters supermarket)
  • Crash Course in Spanish (Alhambra)
  • Children's activities including Cookie-Decorating, Christmas Decoration-making (Trinity Church Hall)
  • Make a scented cushion (Grove Centre)
  • Spiritual Wellbeing sessions
  • Yoga for Children and Adults (Grove Centre)
  • Laughing Yoga
  • A film about the history of Kirkdale (Windmill Pub), made by local historian Steve Grindlay and local filmmaker Joyce Treasure

Hugh adds: "This is a collective community happening and some great people have come together and donated their time voluntarily. Local graphic designer Cathy Hull has designed the posters and PMS Printers printed them gratis. Penelope Else (who recently worked with Mary Portas and is arranging a Forest Hill Fashion Trail in April) is in charge of the website and social media. Admin/Press is being covered by Rebecca Leathlean at Alhambra Home & Garden and Jenny Holland at Wooster & Stock."
