One of the UK’s leading junior athletics clubs received a deserved accolade this month as its Chairman, Conrad Rowland, won Volunteer of the Year award.

Get Berkshire Active’s Inspiration and Participation awards honoured those people who have gone the extra mile to inspire others to take up physical activity.

More than 250 people, and the 30 nominees from across the county, were joined by special guests including the former GB Paralympic rower Helene Raynsford, Great Britain skeet shoot star and BBC’s young sports personality of the year Amber Hill, the London Irish player, Patt Phibbs, and kayaking Olympic bronze medallist Jon Schofield.

Athletics coach Conrad is chairman of Slough Junior Athletics Club, treasurer of Athletics Network Berkshire and the athletics lead for the Berkshire School Games, helping to plan and manage county competitions. He’s also established coaching clubs at five schools in Slough.

Conrad says: “I am very grateful for the award, and the other nominees, Shaida Akbar and Rowena Tew, would have been worthy winners. It is not in my nature to take the applause as I see it as doing what is required. Whilst I very much appreciate the thanks and recognition I am always looking to the next step, and I know what others also do to contribute to the successes of the club!”

Slough Junior Athletics Club is widely recognised as one of the leading junior athletics clubs in England, with members reaching national top twenty levels, including number one rankings.

Their goal is to develop young athletes to realise their potential as runners, sprinters, hurdlers, throwers and jumpers through skill acquisition and mastery in a fun and engaging environment. They welcome athletes of all abilities aged from 5 to 20 and they are located at TVAC, between Windsor and Slough.
