91 solar-equipped parking spaces with battery storage and EV charging are planned in a new partnership.

Smartports has signed an agreement with the private housing company Krylbohus in Avesta, Sweden to develop solar-powered parking solutions with integrated EV charging and battery storage. The initiative includes up to 91 so-called Smartports, with an installed solar capacity of approximately 1.1 MWp and a battery storage system totaling around 2.3 MW.

The goal is to transform existing parking areas into local energy hubs – where electricity is produced, stored, and used directly in connection with residential buildings.

The project includes the properties Luxvreten 2, Bäckvreten 1, and Fridhem 11 in Avesta. An initial analysis shows that the facility could generate approximately 0.25 GWh of electricity annually, contributing to increased local energy supply and reduced strain on the power grid.

– We see rapidly growing interest from housing companies that want to take a more active role in the energy transition. With solutions like this, it is possible to both create new revenue streams and increase value for tenants, says Johan Gren, COO at Smartports Sweden.

– For us, this is an important investment to future-proof our properties. We want to offer modern and sustainable solutions to our tenants while contributing to a more resilient local energy supply, says Henrik Brossmann, CEO at Krylbohus.

The investment is carried out within the framework of a lease-based model, where Smartports provides the majority of the capital investment. For Krylbohus, this creates an opportunity to develop its properties without large upfront costs.

In addition to solar production and charging infrastructure, the battery storage system enables more efficient energy use over time. It also allows for greater flexibility in the energy system  – something that is becoming increasingly important as electrification accelerates.

The initiative in Avesta is an example of a growing trend where already developed surfaces are used for energy production. By building on top of parking areas, new energy can be generated without using additional land.

About Smartports
Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Örebro, Sweden, Smartports transforms parking lots into revenue-generating energy hubs by combining solar panels, EV charging, and battery storage. This creates scalable energy ecosystems that utilize existing spaces instead of exploiting new land, contributing to the green transition while generating new revenue streams for property owners.
