A classic book from 1900 re-imagined into a 2013 interactive book app, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for iPad
To celebrate the Oz the Great and Powerful release to DVD, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for iPad app is on sale now for $.99 (regularly $3.99) for a limited time! Taking it from 1900 to 2013, the classic book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, was re-imagined into an interactive book app by Smashing Ideas, a digital media company and division of Random House, Inc., who were given full creative direction to re-imagine the timeless tale.
We took this and ran with it, and built The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for iPad app, a beautiful interactive reading application, developed by the brilliant, Ben Roberts (Smashing Ideas Director of ePublishing), who brought you the interactive book apps Alice for the iPad, Jungle Book and Pat the Bunny, and beautifully illustrated by artist Shaun Pendergast.
Shaun’s illustrations can be found in both the Random House Children’s eBook and this interactive app (set to release in iTunes later this week). For him, this project was a personal dream come true. When he was very young, his father gave him his grandmother's set of L. Frank Baum’s original Oz novels. He was instantly enthralled with the world of Oz and ecstatic to team up with Smashing Ideas and Random House to bring his version of the classic tale to life.
The standalone app includes the complete novel, one of the best-known original fairy tales in American pop culture. We created a new world of storytelling by taking this classic and transforming it into an immersive interactive journey through the land of Oz. While there are interactions, sound effects, animation and real-time physics throughout the app, we didn’t want to kill the experience with interactivity and take away from the beautiful illustrations. The overarching goal was to make this the most beautiful illustrated book yet made for the iPad.
