Snell introduces the xStream Platform for end-to-end IP-enabled production
Quasar XS to be first product available on new, integrated platform
IBC2014, Booth 8.B70: Newbury, UK, September 12, 2014 – Snell today introduced the xStream platform to provide realtime processing in the IP production environment. XStream is a software-based media processing engine that offers a cost-effective solution for customers looking to make the transition to IP production without losing continuity with existing workflows. The xStream platform and related products integrate with Snell’s forthcoming IP routing and control solution to make workflows as easy and intuitive as ever.
The new platform, based on Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware, provides a framework for hosting multiple products that manage all areas of realtime broadcast processing, from conversion and audio processing to video mixing and keying. In addition, the platform offers full compatibility with Snell Media Biometrics monitoring which is key to enhancing the ‘monitoring by exception’ environment, as well as integration with Snell’s powerful IP routing and control solutions. All of which makes the xStream Platform an efficient and effective solution for next generation IP environments.
The first product to be offered on the xStream platform will be Quasar XS; now the IP production world can also benefit from high quality realtime format conversion. Offering up-and-down conversion using Snell’s award winning motion adaptive technology, Quasar XS as part of the xStream platform helps customers make a functional move towards an IP production environment without sacrificing familiar operational processes and workflows.
“As the industry shifts toward Internet-based, software-driven technology architectures, our goal is to offer customers innovative solutions that reduce costs, increase flexibility, and enable them to deliver higher quality content across multiple channels,” noted Robert Rowe, managing director of Live TV at Snell. “Historically, broadcasters work in production environments dominated by bespoke on-site hardware, and software that depends on that hardware to run. With the new xStream platform, our customers will be able to use the same software tools with which they are already familiar, but with an underlying infrastructure that takes advantage of third-party and generic IT components for cost-savings and a lighter technology footprint. This new offering is the latest example of our commitment to deliver technologies that lead a seamless transition from today’s environments towards what the future will bring.”
Quasar XS features include IP Streaming, SD/HD/3G up, down, and cross conversions with preset ARC recalls, a frame synchronizer with firewalled outputs, and clean source switching, as well as video and audio procamp and image enhancement. Capabilities also include compatibility with Snell’s Media Biometrics and RollCall control and monitoring systems.
Streaming standards include uncompressed SMPTE 2022-6, VC-2 HQ, as well as handling the numerous video formats and frame rates, making it easy and comprehensive for users.
The xStream Platform is being showcased at IBC 2014, with the platform and new products planned for roll out during 2015. Visitors to Snell’s stand, 8.B70, will have access to information on the new platform as well as the Quasar xStream.
