Society of Interventional Radiology Names Marshall Hicks, M.D., FSIR, 2012–13 President
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Marshall Hicks, M.D., FSIR, an interventional radiologist and head of the division of diagnostic imaging at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, assumed office as the 2012–13 president of the Society of Interventional Radiology during its 37th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, Calif. SIR is a national organization of nearly 5,000 scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving health care through minimally invasive treatments.
“The Society of Interventional Radiology is committed to developing—and demonstrating the value of—care-changing minimally invasive treatments to improve health care for patients in this era of evidence-based medicine,” said Hicks, who is MD Anderson’s Levit Family Distinguished Chair in Diagnostic Imaging and professor of vascular and interventional radiology. “Interventional radiologists are responsible for much of the medical innovation and advancement of minimally invasive treatments that are commonplace today. This year, we will continue to measure, document and communicate the value this specialty brings to health care administrators, to insurers, to legislators—and most importantly, to patients,” he added.
Hicks received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completed a clinical internship in general surgery at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga. After his radiology residency and serving as an instructor in vascular radiology at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, he completed a clinical fellowship in interventional/vascular radiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. Hicks also served as an assistant professor and associate professor at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, Mo., before joining MD Anderson in 1998.
He is an active member of many professional organizations and his bibliography includes more than 100 papers and book chapters covering a wide variety of topics in radiologic oncology. Hicks has been listed in Best Doctors in America and is a recipient of an American Board of Radiology Lifetime Service Award.
