Arkansas Building Owner Ignored Asbestos Abatement Laws

The removal and disposal of asbestos products from a construction site must always be done in a specific way to reduce the risk of mesothelioma. According to the Arkansas state officials, the owner of a building in Morrilton, Arkansas may did not obey the proper removal methods.

According to the Associated Press, a building owned by J.J. Magie that had been damaged when an adjacent building collapsed onto it was slated for demolition once Magie claimed he had received permission to do so. Despite this, he never contacted the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to set up proper asbestos removal techniques, as he was required to do.

When asbestos removal projects eventually got underway at the building, they were not properly monitored by state officials. As a result, there is a chance that asbestos fibers may have been released, increasing the risk of mesothelioma for construction workers and town residents who were nearby.

Officials told the AP that Magie was aware that he needed to speak to the ADEQ and get the proper permits for the asbestos abatement. Magie says he will now cooperate with the ADEQ to resolve the issue.
