Cape Cod School Exposed Students to Asbestos During Renovations

Cape Cod Regional Technical High School was fined more than $3,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards (Mass DLS) after renovations to a building on its campus that was done by a group of carpentry students them to loose asbestos fibers.

Wicked Local Cape Cod recently reported that the high school received a fine for $3,300 after the Mass DLS discovered that nine students and their instructor were exposed to asbestos dust while removing roughly 600-square-feet of vinyl tiles from the interior floor of the building. The tiles were later found to contain asbestos.

The fine was the second asbestos-related penalty for the school in recent months. The school failed to produce an asbestos management when asked to supply one by the Mass DLS in 2011 to ensure the school complied with the federal Asbestos Emergency Response Act

“I feel terrible that our students were exposed even for the limited amount of time,” said Cape Tech Superintendent Robert P. Sanborn III. “All the other stuff we are doing is getting up to speed on the regulations that we were not in compliance with. We will be fully compliant going forward.”
