Chemicals in Household Products May be Harmful to Hormones

A new study shows that more than 200 common household products contain chemicals that may be connected to hormone disruption and asthma.

Researchers at the Silent Spring Institute in Newton, MA tested a wide range of products including lotions, sunscreens, soaps, detergents, shaving cream, and perfumes. They found 55 different chemicals linked to adverse side effects in humans. These chemicals included bisphenol A (BPA), parabens, and phthalates.

Church & Dwight, Proctor & Gamble, Foodhold USA, and Unilever are among the companies found to be producing these products, according to HealthDay.

“These results show we are exposed to a wide range of chemicals of concern in everyday products, and the chemicals aren't always listed on the labels," said study author Robin Dodson. "That can be a basis for modernizing our chemical policy in the United States. It seems these chemicals are not being adequately tested before being put on the shelf."
