Children’s jewelry from 14 U.S. retailers were tested and found to contain high levels of unsafe heavy metals.

According to UPI, officials at the Ecology Center reported that 99 pieces of jewelry were tested from Burlington Coat Factory, Big Lots, 99 City, Target, Glitter, Claire’s, Walmart, Forever 21, Meijers, H&M, Meijers, Justice, Hot Topic and Icing stores. The retailers were located in Ohio, Michigan, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York.

The heavy metals that were found in the children’s jewelry included chromium, lead, cadmium and nickel.

HealthyStuff.org used an X-ray fluorescence analyzer to measure the levels of metals in the jewelry. Fifty nine percent of the jewelry contained one or more heavy metals at high levels.

"There is no excuse for jewelry, especially children's jewelry, to be made with some of the most well studied and dangerous substances on the planet," said Jeff Gearhart, research director at the Ecology Center and founder of HealthyStuff.org. “We urge manufacturers to start replacing these chemicals with non-toxic substances immediately."
