The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced thatfood illness outbreaks caused by imports increased in 2009 and 2010.

According to Reuters, almost half of the outbreaks came from foods imported from places that were not previously associated with the food illness incidences. From 2005 to 2010, there were 39 incidents in 15 countries, with 17 of them occurring in 2009 and 2010, reports the CDC. Fish was the most common source of imported food-borne disease outbreaks at 17, followed by spices with six outbreaks, including five from fresh or dried peppers.

Nearly half, 45 percent, of the imported foods causing the disease outbreaks came from Asia.

The CDC estimates that 76 million incidents of food borne illnesses occur every year in the U.S.
