GM Sued Over Seat Warmers

General Motors is being sued in aproduct liability lawsuit by an Oregon husband and wife claiming the automaker’s seat warmers severely burned the man.

According to the Register Guard, the alleged incident occurred in November 2010 while Donnie and Tammy Hedlind were in their 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. The couple claimed that because Donnie Hedlind is paraplegic, he was unable to feel the seat warmer burning him. They also allege that the resulting third-degree burn caused him to experience further disfigurement, disability, anxiety, humiliation, and interference with his usual activities.

The product liability lawsuit also claims that GM knew of other paraplegic users of GM vehicles who experienced severe burns, yet was negligent by not selling an “adequate safeguard” to prevent the seat from reaching extremely high temperatures. The lawsuit further alleges that the company negligently fails to provide “adequate warning and instructions” to people do not have feeling on their lower body about the dangers of burning from the seats.
