Lawmaker Calls for Ban on “Pink Slime” in School Lunches

"Pink Slime” is making another splash into headlines as a Maine Democrat is calling for it to be banned in school cafeterias.

According to The Hill, Rep. Chellie Pingree said that Pink Slime--a filer for ground beef treated with ammonia--is “gross” and should not be given to school children.

She wrote a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack that stated, “it is wrong to feed children a slurry that was formerly only used for dog food. I hope you will do everything in your power to eliminate it from school lunch programs around the country."

Although many fast food chains such as McDonalds and Burger King stopped using Pink Slime last year, the Department of Agriculture and the meat industry continues to contend that the product is safe for human consumption.
